Can you use a hashtag in a title? Better yet, can you use a hashtag when you aren't tweeting? You can do whatever you want when you are on #mathcation.
#mathcation2013 has officially started now, since I am done teaching/working for the week. #mathcation2013 is taking place this year at the annual ICTM conference in Peoria. I truly love the professional developments that our state has to offer! (Between ICTM and MMC we Illinoisans are blessed.) Tomorrow is the ICTM pre-conference sessions about Common Core and some of the new assessments coming down the pipeline. Friday and Saturday are the actual conference sessions, which have practitioner based conference sessions for K-16 mathematics educators.
I am truly looking forward to #mathcation2013 with my friends, Carrie and Kimmy. We are ready to get our nerd on. We are ready to drink the free Starbucks and hot cocoa at our hotel. And, we are ready to have fun and be mathtastic. I think that this conference is perfectly positioned in the middle of the stressful semesters. I am looking forward to a break from "real life" to spend time with friends, while also learning about how to be a better mathematics educator.
I'm giving two presentations on Saturday. The first one is (surprise, surprise) about negative integers. I will be talking about student-constructed stories about number sentences with negative integers, the role of context with negative integers, and sharing a lesson that I have used. The second presentation is with my friend, Carrie. We will be giving a workshop on a volume exploration for calculus students. Carrie and I co-designed this exploration and she used it with her calculus students last year. She let me come into her class one day, take notes, and talk with her students. She did the dirty work of continuing the exploration for the next day or so without me. (I called it dirty work because the volumes of revolution got pretty messy sometimes). At our workshop, the participants will get a hand-on approach to our activity, while also discussing student misconceptions, journal questions, and limitations/challenges of volumes of revolution. I hope to see you there!
T-shirts may have been produced for #mathcation2013 ...
And, #mathcation2013 may happen to rhyme with vacation ...
This does not mean that #mathcation2013 is not serious. It is serious!
SERIOUS MATH FUN!
