I was invited by my friends Tracy and Jodi (both awesome middle school math teachers) to help at family night again! yay!! :)
Last night, I had the opportunity to help with their family math night, which was designed for K - 8 students with high school student helpers. Elementary, middle, and high school teachers also helped. And, I even saw several building principals participating! It was awesome to see the whole community involved!
My room/station stop was a card game called the "Integer: Draw or Discard." This card game is from a recent article I co-authored in Teaching Children Mathematics. After playing and participating, the parents got a set of cards and recording sheets to take home and play!
As a researcher, it was exciting seeing how Kindergarteners played this game compared to third/fourth graders. As a teacher-researcher and friend, it was completely awesome see the shock on parents' faces when their students were able to make "smart" moves and deal with the negative numbers san school instruction!
