Tonight, on Pi-Eve, I am so proud of my friends (and math-tas-tic middle school teachers) that organized the best math fair…EVER.
Tracy and Jodi, you made my heart smile tonight.
Just a few of the exciting events tonight included:
The Fraction Café
The Estimation Alley
Pi Day Poster Voting Contest
Logic and Math Games
Math Photo Booth
The children and their parents were running through the halls to different math stations/rooms. There was laughter and discussion about mathematics. Even the principal was on the speaker about the scan-venger hunts. I am trying to recover from my math-high this Pi Eve.
What I did at the math fair:
I manned the “Maximize Your Popcorn” station. Students were given a 22” by 28” piece of poster board and asked to maximize their volume. The results and reasoning from the students mostly centered around maximizing the surface area. Some of the children stated that if they made a cone without overlapping parts, this would be the best way to get the most popcorn, while some of the younger children just found it challenging to CONSTRUCT a popcorn container. Admittedly, there was a bit of calculus going on behind the scenes too with a high school teacher, student volunteers, and myself.
One of my Teacher-Takeaways:
I feel motivated to make a scan-venger hunt myself now! I can just imagine my students running and looking for problems. :)
Thank you for having me and I am so proud!
